Russia fuels Assad crimes by protecting him at international forums like the UN — and arming the mafia regime, which Russia has been doing since the early 1970s.
Why does Russia so vehemently protect the Assad family?
In the early 70s, Hafez Assad knew that the Soviet Union was the only place he could obtain the weapons required for a war with Israel. But initially the Soviet Union was not all too interested; they didn’t want to arm a young regime that would go to war with America’s friends; they needed more than money. In exchange, Assad provided the Russians with: stable presence in the Middle East, access to air & naval facilities, and a face against American influence.
What’s sad is that regime fans, who champion ‘anti-imperialism’, totally ignore the Russian (and Iranian) weapons and money used to kill Syrian civilians.
